Driving Licenses Requirements for driving Tokyo Rentals Y.K. motorcycles in Japan

1) Monaco, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia and Taiwan

    

( these countries did not ratify the 1949 Geneva Convention for

International Driving Permits, the only one accepted by Japan )

Driving License Holders from these 7 countries need to have an Official Japanese Translation of their national Driving License,  obtainable for a fee either at JAF (Japanese Automobile Federation ) or at their respective country’s embassies and /or consulates.  We also offer these services for a fee, just contact us  as we need the scanned license documents  and the signed authorization to initiate and pick up after translation at the embassies.

  1. a) Minimum Age: 20 years
  2. b) Passport
  3. c) Credit Card(s)
  4. d) Valid japanese Driving License or a valid national license with clearly marked motorcycle license together with an Official Japanese Translation.

2) Italy, Poland and Russia 

These 3 countries signed both the 1949 Geneva Convention ( VALID ) on road traffic as well as the 1968 Vienna Convention (INVALID) on road traffic.

Driving License holders from these countries have to make sure when applying with their authorities  that on the top page of your International Driving Permit  (IDP) the 1949 Geneva Convention stamp is featured – only this one is valid in Japan.

  4. d) Valid japanese Driving License or a valid national license with clearly marked motorcycle license together with an IDP with 1949 Geneva Convention on front page

3) United States of America 

In the USA, the only institutions allowed to offer and sell  Japan-accepted legal  International Driving Permits are :

the American Automobile Association and

the American Automobile Touring Alliance which offers their IDPs through the National Automobile Club.

Make 100% sure  your IDP is issued by either one of these two.

  4. d) Valid japanese Driving License or a valid national license with clearly marked motorcycle license together with a valid IDP with 1949 Geneva Convention on front page, issued by either the  American Automobile Association  or  the American Automobile Touring Alliance

            General Requirements for valid International Driving License Permits

            (IDP)

  1. a) IDP has to be issued by same country as the national driver’s license.
  2. b)        “1949 Geneva Convention” must appear on the front cover to be valid in Japan.
    1. IDP must be valid and cannot be expired.
    2. d)       IDP must have correct stamp for motorcycle use.
    3. e) IDP must have been issued by correct authority.
    4. f) IDP not valid on its own – only valid together with valid national license.
